Lemonade is causing quite the stir around here (no pun intended), as was my article “Why You Feel Down & How to Fix It”. Naturally, receiving any ounce of negative feedback is upsetting but you live, you learn, and you move on.
So, as I was writing my next posts for the weeks to come, I had Lemonade on repeat and BOOM! It hit me and “How to Handle Criticism Like Beyonce” was born.
Step 1: Write about it.
… or sing about it, dance about it, paint about it, etc. Let the experience teach you whatever you need to learn and then express yourself accordingly.
I use any criticism I get as blog post inspiration. If someone tells me I can’t do something, I write about it. If someone says something about my pictures, I post more pictures. The key is to use the criticism to propel you forward on your own terms. Your focus shouldn’t be to please other people.
You should never change for other people, otherwise you end up losing yourself entirely.
You want to use criticism as positively as possible, and for some, that means using it as inspiration. Beyonce did it in Formation by addressing Illuminati rumors, ‘y’all haters corny with that Illuminati mess’. Go Bey!
Step 2: Capitalize on the haters.
One of the best ways to handle criticism is to embrace it. Man Repeller, Eminem, Daddy Issues, The Fat Jewish, and Beyonce have mastered this technique. Beyonce got some heat after the release of the Formation video and police started a “Boycott Beyonce” movement, and what did Queen Bey do? She had Boycott Beyonce merchandise made for the Lemonade tour. Controversial? Yes, but controversy sells!
Step 3: Make no apologies.
In her new song Sorry, Beyonce makes her message clear by saying, ‘Sorry… I ain’t sorry’. There’s no mistaking she lives unapologetically and you should too.
Unless someone’s feelings got hurt from malicious intent, there is no reason you should apologize for being you.
It’s your life and no one should judge you for how you live it, but they will. It’s impossible to please everyone and you’re going to encounter people who just don’t like you no matter what you do. You’ll receive backlash, criticism, and hate but don’t let it get you down.
Because you know what they say, when in doubt “Be – yonce”.
