Design Files

In the past weeks travelling throughout Europe I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside a great brand true to my own style, Holland-based  denim label, Gstar Raw. Most recently with the editorial on the beautiful streets of Amsterdam and also back in June shooting streetstyle for the first time at Pitti Uomo in Florence HERE and HERE. While staying in Amsterdam I was invited to check out the Gstar Raw HQ, have look in the atelier – where all the custom denim pieces are created – and to meet womenswear Head Designer Rebekka Bach. Thanks so much Rebekkah for taking the time to answer my few questions!

Who is the ‘G-Star Girl’?

The G-Star girl is urban cool, intelligent and critical, yet refined and feminine.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I seek inspiration from vintage garments and vintage images. During Spring and Fall I love to travel in south of Europe to check out vintage markets. Besides Japan has the greatest vintage selection – you can hardly go wrong there.

What is it about denim that inspires you most?

I have a deep passion for details and here denim offers an endless field of opportunities. Already as a student I was practicing projects in un-treated denim and street wear collections. When looking back – I find it a pity  that many design students don’t learn about denim and workwear, since I consider it a base – how to understand design clothing. With denim I’m deeply fascinated by the technical knowledge and in the same time the elegance and toughness it offers.

What matters most to you as a fashion designer?

I love the fact that I can spin a creative idea and make it real. For example, how to make the perfect back in a pair of jeans. We created the “magic of the back pockets”. By studying back pocket sizes and shapes even stitching – we found a special formula, that offers an optimal solution of benefits.
