A Surprising Introduction to Barre

Written by: Monica Bestek

I’ve always been inquisitive and super keen to find out what Barre is all about. I’ve seen a lot of well-known models and celebrities get their Barre on when scrolling through Instagram. So when a friend asked me to meet her in Sydney for a class and some brunch, I couldn’t be more excited!

But then these questions started rolling through my head: Is it going to be hard? What are we going to do? How does it work? What do I wear!? (silly questions really :P)

So what exactly is Barre you ask?

mon 5 years oldIt’s a combination of conditioning exercises that include yoga, pilates, and ballet, which utilizes hand weights, mat work, interval training, and isometric exercises to get you sweaty, smiling, and all that feel good stuff.

So I jumped in the car at 6 am, turned the tunes up loud and proud and made my way to Sydney for a 9:30 am Barre Class! Of course I was fashionably late courtesy of Sydney’s #TerribleTraffic. I quickly dumped my sneakers when I walked through the door and jumped straight onto that mat that was waiting for me.

We started with some downward dogs, arm exercises with weights (….“1001, 1002, 1003” – I didn’t even know I had those little burning devil muscles), pliés which took me back to my 5 year-old ballet classes (#Nostalgic), and several other small movements that isolated my butt and thighs. It turned out to be a full body workout that was surprisingly relaxing? SAY WHAT! We finished off with some good stretching and mediation (closing our eyes and lots of deep breaths to get rid excess worry and stress). I have to admit, I was quite sweaty yet totally relaxed! ????????

This was my first Barre class and though it was different compared to my usual exercise routine, I found it really refreshing!

This is a great reminder that it’s always a good idea to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. You may or may not like it but it’s a learning process. Who knows – you might find your new favourite workout!

I’m definitely more keen to try a Barre Cardio class now (same idea, but a bit faster paced) and I’ll give you an update when I get to it!

If you’re interested in Barre, I suggest keeping your high intensity workouts and throwing in a Barre session as something extra to spice up your weekly workout routine!

5 Barre Benefits

  1. Tones your body
  2. Improves your posture
  3. Strengthens your core
  4. Improves your flexibility
  5. Improves your mind and body concentration

What to Wear

I personally would wear tights or training shorts and a sports bra with a loose fitting singlet to allow free movement!

I would love to hear your thoughts on Barre if you’ve tried it or if you’re curious – comment below! ????
